Media Recorder enables synchronous video recordings from up to eight different video and audio sources at a time. Compatible with The Observer® XT, EthoVision® XT, and a broad range of cameras, it is the ideal recording tool. It is at the core of your lab and offers you precision and flexibility in video recording and synchronization. Media Recorder can also be used as a stand-alone tool to make recordings and analyze those later. This is especially useful if you need videos with a high frame rate for animals that move very fast or high resolution for tiny animals or many arenas. Analyzing those videos offline will make sure that every single frame is accurately analyzed.
- Easy to use.
- Flexible software that fits your needs.
- Acquire high quality recordings at HD in MP4 format.
- Record videos with or without sound.
- Accurate synchronization of up to eight cameras.
- Versatile, extra equipment for mixing (PiP) or combining videos is not necessary.

- Compatible with Windows 7 and Windows 10 (64 bit computers).
Media Recorder offers you precision and flexibility in video recording, synchronization and the recording of rapidly occurring behaviors. Media Recorder can be used with the newest state of the art video recording technology. It is compatible with a broad range of high-quality digital cameras based on today’s technologies, as well as analog systems. If you are considering generating video files to be used with EthoVision XT or The Observer XT, Media Recorder will increase the value and ease-of-use of your complete solution.
Media Recorder is compatible with a wide variety of high quality, industrial cameras, such as analog cameras, FireWire camera’s, industrial USB cameras, IP cameras, and GigE cameras. Each camera has its own advantages, which means that there is always a solution that meets your needs. With special video cameras you can even record video up to 100 frames per second. The timer includes seconds and milliseconds. In particular, when one is studying rapidly occurring behaviors, it is ideal to record videos and score them afterwards with The Observer XT. The playback functionality of The Observer XT allows you to play back the videos at a low speed, and score behaviors in greater detail.
Media Recorder is easy to operate which for example means that you can switch between different cameras and control them with your mouse or joystick. With IP cameras, pan-tilt-zoom is now possible: position the cameras precisely with a joystick. For example, you can record animals in a zoo and use Media Recorder to combine the videos. The video cameras can be controlled with a joystick and recording can be started manually or another software package can be used to command the Media Recorder.
Picture by Picture and Picture in Picture
Four videos can be combined into one file. Choose to have up to four camera inputs displayed in four equal quadrants (picture by picture, PbP) or to display up to three small video images in one main video image (picture in picture, PiP). Where you can record eight video streams, PiP and PbP is limited to four. PiP allows you to choose the position of the embedded video images within the primary video and then identify which image comes from which camera with a superimposed number on the camera image.
Besides using the Media Recorder as a stand-alone tool, it can also be used in The Observer XT or in EthoVision XT. Special protocols can be defined to start and/or stop recording of a video file while scoring data in The Observer XT or video tracking in EthoVision XT is done. By controlling the Media Recorder from The Observer XT, for example, you can manage all your data with one application.
It is also possible to create your own solution or ask Noldus to assist you with designing the entire lab set-up as there are always numerous technological issues to consider.
