Noldus products amongst wolves
9 March 2010

The Austrian Wolf Science Center uses The Observer® XT and Pocket Observer™ to study the behavior of wolves.

At the Wolf Science Center, they study cognition and cooperation in wolves and dogs, in the context of their relationship with con-specifics and with their human raisers. According to their scientists, wolf-human interactions have developed into close cooperation and intimate relationships between dogs and humans during the course of domestication. Cooperation is also at the core of canine social organization. Although it is clear that human collaborative skills are exceptional, comparisons with animals may reveal the evolutionary origins and the functional relevance of cooperation. Moreover, this approach might provide the opportunity to understand how cooperation evolves during the life of the animals, and the mechanisms that shape it.

A Track3D system installed at the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in Beijing
1 March 2010

A Track3D system for the study of flight behavior of mosquitoes in 3D is now operating at the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in Beijing, China. This system includes a wind tunnel made specifically for studying nocturnal insects and the state-of-the-art software EthoVision and Track3D which allow reliable tracking of insect flight from video images and accurate 3-dimensional reconstruction of the flight trajectories.

Uncovering the secrets of insect flight and orientation in space is a challenge of modern biology that requires the best technology currently available. At the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in Beijing, researchers want to find out what stimuli affect the flight behavior of mosquitoes, which are a concern for public health, and why. In such a situation, 3D analysis of flight is indispensable to understand the insect’s orientation in space.

Pioneers in social behavior research speak to a packed room
7 December 2009

The Measuring Social Behavior: Scientific Challenges, test Paradigms, and Tools symposium (during Neuroscience 2009) was an overwhelming success.  It brought together some of the pioneers in social behavior research. The panel was led by Dr. Pawel Boguszewski (Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology, Poland) and also featured Dr. Robert Blanchard, Dr. Marcel van Gaalen, and Professor Stephen M Siviy. Together, they provided a multifaceted discussion of the current state of studying social behavior.

Missed it? Or want to re-experience the symposium? Watch the video’s and presentations here!

The talks of the four renowned speakers were diverse and covered quite a full spectrum related to social behavior. There were two major themes, the first being the highly detailed behavioral assessment versus high throughput behavioral assessment.

PatternVision Data Exchange Program
22 September 2009

Noldus Information Technology is pleased to announce the release of the PatternVision Data Exchange Program (DEP). With the DEP, an accurate conversion of data from The Observer XT to Theme for extensive analysis has become much easier. The DEP is a simple and straightforward program that converts exported files from The Observer XT 7.0, 8.0, and 9.0 (.ODX files) to text files that Theme can then import. The DEP and manual are available for FREE to Theme users on the Theme download site of the Noldus webpage.

Theme detects patterns in your data that you would not have thought existed. Pattern detection works best on continuously scored events, such as the data produced by The Observer XT.
