FaceReader used in a smart home

Living labs and smart homes are gaining acceptance in the international research community. They often deal with the questions: how do people use products, and how can researchers benefit from that in the development process? Example Lab: Philips HomeLabA living lab as well as a smart home brings together end-users, researchers, industrialists, and policy makers. In a smart home the environment reacts to the user’s behavior. Researchers would like to create a system which learns from behaviors of the user and thus reacts to these behaviors.

In ‘Towards an affective aware home’ Kuderna-Iulian et al (2009) propose a control mechanism that allows the home/system to learn new behavior preferences without editing predefined rules, but by assessing the users emotional responses to the system’s decisions. In this research, FaceReader was used to capture the emotional response. By processing these responses, the system learns the preferences of the user.
