Research projects - Animal behavior

Noldus plays an active role in several leading research projects around the world. Our preferred role is that of a technology partner: we develop tools and methods, and the researchers use and validate them. That way we contribute to scientific progress. At the same time, the projects give us an opportunity to develop relevant new technologies - not only for today's mainstream use but also for tomorrow's needs. Current projects


EQIPD This project is about improving the quality of data acquisition in systems for measuring animal behavior in drug development. It is funded by the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), which is the European Commission's scheme for supporting precompetitive and public-private collaboration in the pharmaceutical industry.


GenTORE GenTORE will develop innovative genome-enabled selection and management tools to optimise cattle resilience and efficiency in widely varying and changing environments. A key part of that will be developing new techniques for measuring cows' behavior and welfare as a new tool for livestock phenotyping.


MEDUWA-Vecht(e) This project addresses cross-border pollution issues in the catchment of the Vecht river. One important aspect is contamination of water courses of antibiotics used in agriculture.  If livestock farmers can identify diseases in their animals earlier and more effectively then their use of antibiotics can be reduced, and so also the run-off of those chemicals can also be reduced.

DAISY DAISY-2 In this project, a radically new type of radar technology is being developed. Noldus will test its applicability as a tracking technology for behavioral data in a number of situations, such as precision livestock and smart farming.

VetBioNet VetBioNet An EU Horizon 2020 project developing new ways of monitoring animal health and welfare in secure facilities for studying animal diseases.

GrazingSpace cows GrazingSpace This project funded by the European Space Agency is a feasibility study about the idea of using GPS data to detect the behaviors of cattle which could indicate that their grass is no longer optimal (e.g. searching behaviors) and linking that to satellite image data to determine the optimal location to send the cows to.

BigDevelopments BigDevelopments This project is developing a completely new concept of pig husbandry making the combination of intensive production and sustainable farming possible. Noldus will develop new tracking and track analysis technologies for pigs in this project.

EU-Aums EU-AIMS The largest autism research project in the world, using Noldus’ EthoVision to measure interaction between mice models of autism.
Brainview BRAINVIEW This Horizon 2020 project is about creating an integrated view of disruptions of early brain development.


Recently completed projects


High throughput phenotyping of plant resistance to sucking insect pests This project followed on from the EthoGenomics project and continued to develop new methods for automatically measuring behaviors in the insect pests which are indicative of plant resistance.


PhenoRat The PhenoRat project focussed on Huntington Disease and Spinocerebellar ataxia type 17. Noldus developed new phenotyping methods.

crack it CRACK IT - Multi-organ toxicity testing in zebrafish Development of a platform of rapid a reliable preclinical screening tools that will accelerate the development of new drugs and reduce pharmaceutical industry costs.

NeuroBasic PharmaPhenomics NeuroBasic PharmaPhenomics This project developed systems which can be used in new drug discovery strategies in neuroscience

TAO project

TAO - Technology for AUtomated Observation A development project to integrate physiology, video tracking and ultrasonic methods for measuring animals’ behavior

NeuroBSIK NeuroBSIK This project developed new mouse models for brain diseases and resulted in improvements to EthoVision video analysis software.

E-Track E-Track The E-Track project developed an end-to-end solution for analyzing location-based behavior in wild animals.  It has resulted in the TrackLab product.

This project was an FP7  Academic-Industrial Initial Training Network (ITN) on Innovative Treatment Approaches of Huntington's and Parkinson's Disease. Noldus developed novel data analysis methodology as part of this project.

EthoGenomics EthoGenomics Development of high-throughput screening of crops for resistance to aphids and thrips. It has resulted in improvements to EthoVision video analysis software.

SenseWell SenseWell - Automated assessment of health and wellbeing In SenseWell, a system that automatically assesses health and wellbeing in animal husbandry systems has been developed. It combines Noldus' EthoVision software with ultrasound and physiology measurements in an integrated system for measuring animal behavior.
