Meduwa

The Vecht is a river that runs from the hills of Nord-Rhine Westphalia, through the Dutch province of Overijssel to the IJsselmeer lake. In this project, multidisciplinary teams will investigate various aspects of reducing pollution from pharmaceuticals in the river and associated water courses. As its catchment is largely rural and antibiotics are very heavily used in modern agriculture, run-off from antibiotics used to treat farm animals contributes substantially to the pollution.

If the use of antibiotics can be reduced by early detection of problems with health and welfare of farm animals, this has the potential to result in significant reduction in pollution levels - and of course not just here but in all agricultural systems with large antibiotic use.

The role of Noldus

Noldus is further developing its technology, especially TrackLab and physiological sensors to monitor and measure the behavior of farm animals, focusing on those aspects which give a good indication of the animals' health and welfare.

Stakeholder workshop

In order to involve end-users and other stakeholders in the solutions developed within MEDUWA, Noldus organized a workshop in August 2017. During this session, we collected requirements for the final solution from different stakeholders: farmers, researchers, genetics companies and animal health consultants. The goal was to ensure that the solution will meet the needs of these different stakeholders in the most optimal way. We also discussed thresholds and issues related to the use of such solutions. During the workshop, 23 participants from different organisations worked on value proposition canvasses for the different stakeholders, which resulted in an extensive overview of tasks, ‘pains’ and ‘gains’, offering a good basis for taking next steps within the project.
