Patients with Parkinson's disease can experience a symptom called freezing of gait. This means that they are unable to continue walking, their legs 'freeze', which can often lead to falls. This is clearly a great problem for them. The remarkable thing is that if they are presented with a cue such as something to step over or a sound then the problem disapears. Likewise they can cycle normally but as soon as they stop cycling they can fall over. In the sub-project 'smart glasses for the elderly' of the larger MIND (Medical Innovation Netherlands Germany) INTERREG project we will investigate if augmented reality techniques using smart glasses can be used to help these patients by providing the right cues at the right moment.
