EthoVision 2.2: A new milestone in video tracking

Wageningen, 27 July 2001 - EthoVision 2.2, the upgrade from EthoVision 2.1 (released in March 2001), is now available. Besides many small improvements both in functionality and user interface, this version includes the following new features:

  • Series of Trials
  • Manual Event Recorder
  • Nesting over Behaviors
  • 'Go to' in Visualization
Series of Trials
This functionality allows you to automatically run a series of trials one after the other, with an optional interval in between. For instance, an animal can be observed for the first 10 minutes of every hour of a 72-hour period. By setting up the number of trials that are in a series and the interval duration between each trial you define the series. While the series is going on, EthoVision will automatically store the tracks of a trial and start a new trial using your settings. After each trial, the time remaining to the next trial, the number of trials recorded so far and the total number of trials are displayed.
Manual Event Recorder

The built-in event recorder allows keyboard event recording during a video tracking session. You can use this to score any behavior that cannot be recognized automatically by EthoVision (e.g. grooming, feeding, sexual behavior). Or you can use this to validate and determine the settings of the parameter for the automatic detection of individual or social behavior (e.g. rearing).

  • Behaviors - Define up to 62 behaviors. Behaviors of different animals (in the same or different arenas) are assigned to different keys.
  • Keys - Behavior can be recorded with separate start and stop keys, or as a group of mutually exclusive states.
Nesting over Behaviors
You can select data within tracks on the basis of the behaviors that you have scored by using the manual event recorder. The data analyzed are only those that meet your nesting criteria. If you also select a time window and nest by zones, the samples selected are those for which both or all nesting criteria are true (that is, they are combined with a Boolean AND statement).
'Go to' in Visualization

You can jump to any position in the plots by selecting Go to from the Play menu, and then entering a sample time.
