| The database can be searched using one or a combination of the search fields on the search form. Below is explained how to use the search form and its different fields.
| | References to publications can be easily listed using the last name of an author. For example, the following queries will give these results:
- Vries - Vries, De Vries, Wallis - De Vries, etc.
- Smith - Smith, Smiths, Smith - Johnson, etc.
If you fill in more than author (multiple names separated by a space), you will get all references with either author in the title. For example, the following queries will give these results:
- Johnson Feldman - all references from the authors Johnson and/or Feldman.
- James Fisher Thomann - all references from the authors James and/or Fisher and/or Thomann.
Please note that the name of the author in your query can either be the first author or one of the co-authors.
| | References in the Noldus Bibliography database go back as far as 1987. You can look up references from one particular year or from several years. For example, the following queries will give these results:
- 1999 - All publications published in 1999.
- :1990 - All publications published in 1990 and earlier years.

- neuro - neuroscience, neurology, neuroanatomy, etc.
- rat - rat, rats, etc. behav - behavior, behaviour, behavioral, behavioural, etc.

- mouse mice pup - all references with mouse and/or mice and/or pup in the title.
- epilepsy dementia - all references with epilepsy and/or dementia in the title.
| Source (journal, book, report, etc.) | The database contains references to publications in many different (scientific) journals, books, reports, etc. You can use a word from the title of the journal (book, report, etc.) to make a selection. For example, the following queries will give these results:
- applied - Applied Ergonomics, Applied Animal Behaviour, Journal of Applied Entomology, etc.
- neuro - Trends in Neuroscience, Neuroscience Letters, Neurotoxicology and Teratorlogy, etc.
- zoology - Australian Journal of Zoology, Canadian Journal of Zoology, etc.
If you fill in more than one word (separated by a space), you will get all references with either word or both words in the title. For example, the following queries will give these results:
- proceedings newsletter - all references with proceedings and/or newsletter in the source.
- pharmacology toxicology neurology - all references with either pharmacology and/or toxicology and/or neurology in the source.
| | Each reference in the Noldus Bibliography database has been assigned to a specific research field:
- Entomology
- Ergonomics (including human factors and usability)
- Neuroscience (including pharmacology and toxicology)
- Psychology (including psychiatry and sociology)
- Zoology (including ethology, behavioral ecology and animal welfare)
| | References in the Noldus Bibliography database are divided in three groups:
- Independent reviews - Third-party reviews about Noldus products and their applications.
- Technical papers - Publications about technical aspects of Noldus products, written by Noldus Information Technology staff or co-developers.

| | In the Noldus Bibliography database, references include information on one of the following products:
- The Observer - The professional system for collection, analysis, presentation and management of observational data. Designed for data entry by a human observer, 'live' or from video, using a desktop or handheld computer.
- EthoVision - The ultimate video tracking, motion analysis and behavior recognition system. For reliable automation of behavioral experiments. Records activity, movement and social interactions between animals. Theme - Powerful tool for the detection and analysis of hidden patterns in behavior.
- CatWalk - Professional system for automated quantitative analysis of gait in rats and mice.
- Theme - A tool for the detection and analysis of patterns in time-based data.

 | | Keywords have been assigned to all publications in the Noldus Bibliography database. You can use these keywords to select publications on a particular topic. The search form provides you with a list of all keywords from which you can choose. For example: animal welfare will give you all references to publications in which animal welfare is one of the topics.
| How are different fields combined in my query | After you have filled in the search form, the database is searched using your entries. If you did not fill in certain fields, those fields can have any value. For example, the following queries will give these results:
- Type = Review, Product = MatMan - All reviews on MatMan, irrespective of the author, year of publication, journal, etc.
- Year = 2000, Product = EthoVision - All publications in the year 2000 in which EthoVision is mentioned, irrespective of the author, type of publication, keywords, etc.
- Title = human, Product = The Observer, Author = Jones - All publications of Mr. Jones in which The Observer is mentioned and that has the word 'human' in the title, irrespective of research field, type of publication, keywords, etc.
| | The results of your search are ordered first alphabetically on the last name of the first author, followed by year of publication. The results of the query author = Vries would be ordered as follows:
- Derix, R.; Hooff, J. van; Vries, H. de; Wensing, J. (1993). Male and female mating competition in wolves: female supression vs. male intervention. Behaviour, 127, 141-174.
