Noldus releases uLog™: an innovative tool for the automatic logging of user-computer interaction
Wageningen, 29 May 2006 - Noldus Information Technology today released an innovative tool for the automatic recording of user-computer interaction: uLog. uLog is the ideal tool for the automatic logging of computer events in usability testing and HCI research. It offers researchers a flexible set-up, easy configuration, increased efficiency, and most importantly, accurate logging of user events. uLog is an event recorder that can log more than just keystrokes or mouse clicks. It also reports which applications are active, which menus appear in the user interface, and which pages are opened in a web browser. On top of this, uLog records scrolling, copy and paste actions, the distance traveled by the mouse pointer, and more. Running in the background, uLog will not disturb the test or test participant. With uLog, not only keystrokes are logged: complete text strings are given exactly as the test participant has entered them, so one doesn’t have to figure them out himself. uLog also includes a filter function allowing to select which applications and actions to track. There are two versions available of uLog: Lite and Pro. The Lite version can be downloaded from the Noldus website for free and allows performing basic functions, such as logging keystrokes and mouse clicks. uLog Pro gives the full functionality. This version is fully integrated with The Observer XT, Noldus’ high-end package for behavioral observation. This offers easy synchronization with other observational data. You can use uLog Pro in a connected set-up, where the full logging process on the test PC can be controlled from the observer PC. After the test, data can be automatically transferred to the observer PC using the LAN connection. Also, uLog can work without connection between test and observer PC. The configuration can be saved on a USB stick and plugged into the test PC where it will work from there. No software needs to be installed on the test PC. This is ideal when running tests at a client’s location where installing software on PCs is troublesome. uLog was first presented on the CHI 2006 conference in Montréal, Canada. For more information or the free download of uLog Lite, visit the uLog web page or contact us.
