Gait analysis in spinal cord injured rats
Injury in the spinal cord often results in impaired body functions, including sensory, autonomic, and locomotor functions. In animal research, many experimental treatments are tested for their efficacy to stimulate a recovery of the impaired body funtions, and most studies focus on locomotor functions. One of the most frequently used behavioral tests in rat spinal cord injury research is the BBB locomotor rating scale. In the current experiment both BBB and CatWalk gait analysis were used to test the behavioral implications of a cell transplantation treatment to dorsal hemisection injured rats. With the use of CatWalk, coordinated locomotion was detected in the animal groups, as well as functional treatment effects.
