Educational research

Université du Québec à Montréal - Neurolab

Prof. Julien Mercier from Université du Québec à Montréal is studying educational research. His lab is looking at refined brain information over time, involving the cognition and the affect of the learner.

Prof. Julien Mercier: "In contrast to many other fields, we don’t have paradigms for this kind of research. We don’t have established ways of doing things; we are inventing everything."

Unique educational research lab

One of the unique qualities of this educational neuro-lab is its capability to study two persons in interaction, for instance during video gaming. One person is actively playing with the game, while the other person is a bystander, so doing nothing except looking at what the other player is doing. Both of them are being studied at the same time: EEG and video signals are recorded, as well as eye tracking data.

New field of online measures of learning

His field is relatively new, and the aim is to consider learning as an ongoing process. The field of online measures of learning is trying to address this product question by looking at refined brain information over time involving the cognition and the affect of the learner.

Data integration with The Observer XT

Data integration is at the core of this lab. There are many different data channels, that have to be synchronized to the millisecond, while data is kept in proper shape. The Observer XT is used to launch video recordings and eye trackers at precisely the same moment, and synchronize other data streams using the sync box.

Customer quote

“The Observer allows us to launch the video recording and the eye trackers at precisely the same moment. It permits us to synchronize other data streams using the sync box, which sends out triggers to the EEG recording, for example, so that we can line up those triggers and really synchronize the data stream.”
