PhenoTyper is ideal for all kinds of studies because you can customize the size and walls to any setup you desire for your research. Each configuration consists of a bottom plate, four replaceable walls, and a PhenoTyper top unit. Walls are translucent but can optionally be replaced by (partially) opaque/matted walls to reduce reflection, which is useful for specific studies.
Based on the setup you need, you can choose four different walls for your PhenoTyper. Walls accomodate attachments for a numver of accessoires, such as a feeding station, drinking bottles, CognitionWall, and shelters. You can connect a wide variety of stimulus and monitoring devices with the USB-IO box to the PhenoTyper cage. Examples of optional items include:
- Activity Wheel for rats
- PhenoWheel for mice
- Pellet dispenser
- IR translucent shelter
- Mouse Feeding Monitor
- Operant Conditioning Modules
- Illuminated shelter
- Sound generator
- Third party hardware (In principle you can connect any TTL-based third party hardware to the PhenoTyper cage. Contact us to see what the possibilities are for your specific devices.)
Some examples of wall options are mentioned in the video below.
PhenoTyper is available in two standard sizes: the PhenoTyper 3000 has a floor area of 30cm x 30cm (12"x 12") and the PhenoTyper 4500 has a floor area of 45cm x 45cm (18" x 18"). Universal top unit
The top unit has an integrated infrared sensitive camera, a cue light, and a buzzer producing a single tone for operant conditioning tests. In addition, an aversive white spot light is present to create a light-dark gradient inside the PhenoTyper cage for anxiety testing or approach-avoidance behavior testing. It also contains infrared LED lights to allow video tracking independent of ambient lighting, 24 hours a day. The top unit is universal and can be used for all PhenoTyper cages, making it a cost-effective solution.
