The Social Sciences Research Laboratories at the University of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon, Canada) utilizes three Noldus portable observation labs within their Community-Based Observation Laboratory. The units are available to internal and external researchers hoping to capture naturalistic behavior in community-based environments, or to fully capture qualitative data for larger group interactions, such as consultations, meetings, or focus groups.
Primarily the units are used by researchers with the Northern Oral Language and Writing through Play (NOWPlay) project to observe, document, and analyze child interactions with adults or their peers within northern and rural community or school environments. Researchers hope to track young children’s language and writing development in play-based environments. The aim of the research is to improve literacy and educational achievement of children in rural and northern communities.
